Robert C. Williams American Museum of Papermaking
The Institute for Paper Chemistry moved from Appleton, Wisconsin to Atlanta along with the Dard Hunter collection of paper and papermaking material which was incorporated into this museum. Nice introduction to the science, technology, and history of paper.
The Swiss Paper Museum is housed in a building that was converted into a paper mill in 1453. It contains a working hand-made paper operation as well as exhibits on writing and printing. It's worth a visit in person or via the web.
The Paper Discovery Center
This looks like a dandy little museum in Appleton, Wisconsin with apparently lots of hands-on stuff. I've not been there, but it looks like fun! There is a nice on-line description of paper making.
The Rockport Paper House.
You guessed it. A paper house in Rockport, Mass.
The Wooden Canoe Heritage Association
The ultimate old canoe resource. The issues of Wooden Canoe (the group's publication) are indexed by subject and have several articles on paper canoe construction and/or history. (And what's a wooden canoe except one made from un-processed paper?)
An article from "The Boy Mechanic"
An article scanned and posted by another netizen. This time it's do-it-yourself instructions from 1913 for building a paper canoe.
Twinrocker
A good source for handmade paper, papermaking materials, equipment, and training.
Curtiss Museum
A local history museum in Hammondsport, NY centered around the exploits of Glenn Curtiss, an aviation pioneer. But.... they own a paper rowing shell! When I was there in September of '02, the shell was hanging on the wall in the shop (but accessable to the public). There was talk then about moving it to another museum, so I'm not sure it is still there.
Rensselaer County Historical Society
This museum in Troy, NY (site of paper boat manufacture in the 1800's) also had/has a paper boat. The last time I was there, it was on display in the mansion's carriage house.
The Adirondack Museum
One of the world's great museums with two paper boats in their collection and a display about paper boats in their "other materials" section of the small boat exhibit. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the North Country (open from Memorial Day through mid-October).
The Great Cardboard Boat Regatta(s)
These folks would like to almost franchise the cardboard boat phenomenon. We're aware of several variants to the theme that take place around the country, mostly for the fun or as fund raisers for charities.
